The luteal phase: the phase where your body preps for a potential pregnancy—or resets for a new cycle.

What’s Happening?

After ovulation, progesterone rises to support a potential pregnancy. If fertilization doesn’t occur, hormone levels drop, leading to PMS symptoms and the start of menstruation. This phase is often characterized by mood shifts, bloating, and cravings as the body prepares for a new cycle.

Symptoms You May Experience:

  • Mood swings or irritability

  • Bloating and fluid retention

  • Breast tenderness

  • Increased cravings for carbohydrates and comfort foods

  • Fatigue as progesterone peaks

How to Support Your Body:

  • Focus on protein and healthy fats to stabilize blood sugar.

  • Engage in stress-reducing activities like yoga, meditation, and deep breathing.

  • Shift to lower-intensity workouts to align with declining energy levels.

  • Ensure adequate sleep to help manage hormone fluctuations.

Common Misconceptions:

PMS is just in your head.

Reality: PMS symptoms are caused by real hormonal fluctuations, nutrient deficiencies, and inflammation. Proper nutrition and lifestyle changes can help.

Cravings mean lack of willpower.

Reality: The body craves more carbohydrates due to increased progesterone and serotonin shifts. Choosing nutrient-dense options can help stabilize energy and mood.

You can’t get pregnant in the luteal phase.

Reality: While unlikely, some women experience a second ovulation due to hormonal imbalances, making pregnancy possible.
