What’s Happening?
The menstrual phase marks the beginning of your cycle, characterized by the shedding of the uterine lining if no pregnancy has occurred. Estrogen and progesterone are at their lowest levels, leading to fatigue, potential mood shifts, and lower energy levels. This is a time of renewal as your body prepares for a new cycle.
📉 Low Hormones: During your period, estrogen and progesterone are at their lowest levels, which can explain why you might feel tired, emotional, or even crave more rest.
🌱 The Reset: Think of your period as your body’s way of hitting the reset button—it’s the starting point for a new cycle and a fresh chance for your reproductive system to prepare for ovulation.
Symptoms You May Experience:
Fatigue and low energy
Cramps or discomfort
Increased cravings for comfort foods
Mood fluctuations or heightened emotions
How to Support Your Body:
Prioritize rest and recovery—your body is resetting.
Focus on iron-rich foods like leafy greens, red meat, and legumes to replenish lost nutrients.
Stay hydrated to support circulation and reduce bloating.
Gentle movement, such as yoga or walking, can aid in circulation without overexertion.
Use heat therapy (like heating pads or warm baths) to soothe cramps.
Common Misconceptions:
❌ You should push through workouts like any other time of the month.
→ Reality: Your body needs rest, and overexertion can worsen cramps and fatigue. Opt for gentle movement instead.
❌ You lose a lot of blood during your period.
→ Reality: The average person only loses about 2-3 tablespoons of blood. If you experience very heavy bleeding, it could signal an underlying issue.
❌ You can’t get pregnant while on your period.
→ Reality: While rare, sperm can survive in the body for up to five days, making conception possible if you ovulate early.
❌ “It’s normal to have debilitating pain or super heavy bleeding.”
→ Reality: Painful or overly heavy periods might be common, but they’re NOT normal. These could signal underlying issues like hormonal imbalances.
❌ “Your period should last exactly 7 days.”
→ Reality: Periods vary! A typical range is 2–7 days, and it’s unique to YOU.
❌ “It’s only about pregnancy.”
→ Reality: While it’s key for reproduction, your period is also a sign of hormonal health and balance.
